‘No Photos’

   As the title suggest’s this post won’t be about sharing awesome roller derby imagery,or any imagery at all for that matter.But instead a little about my own recent experiences with the mistress that so many women over the world have fallen in love with, and that wasn’t a cheap shot at quoting that line from Whip it…
However, it’s true i did and still have “fallen in love with this”, I’ve lost a longterm boyfriend along the way, never left my university town & never go home. Not that this is a negative,it’s probably positive overall, it’s just how things have worked out.
  I started in January, & 10 months down the line i’ve passed minimum skills,made the B-team roster twice, bouted and made a few friends that i believe and hope will be with me for years to come. This is all very surprising seeing as i was the kid who it’s fair to say wasn’t ‘athletically gifted’. (My PE teacher once told me that ‘Sports wasn’t my forte,and not to worry myself if i didn’t achieve as much as the others’). Encouraging huh!
 Don’t get me wrong, i didn’t play as well as i would like, probably not even close, but i got played; and that’s something to remember. Something about this sport makes you strive to be the best,for your team and personally. Maybe it’s the glory for some, maybe it’s the growth for others, maybe you just even want to do your dear old mum proud when she’s sitting on that suicide seating shouting “That’s my daughter,that is”. But for me, i just want to feel like i’ve done a good job out there on the track, that i’ve proved my spot on that roster to my team mates, but more importantly to myself.
  Stefanie Mainey, Bonnie D.Stroir, Suzy Hotrod,i could go on. Roller derby has so many great ambassador’s for the sport already, people to look upto for inspiration and motivation when you wonder why you love this sport so much.Especially when you haven’t slept all weekend because you have to rush off to work straight after training,or why you might just save that last beer in the fridge for another night.
   So the next time frustration sets in because a turn stop attempt is quite frankly shocking,or a drill isn’t sinking in because your brain and feet aren’t co-ordinated yet, or i didn’t do quite as well in that scrimmage or jam as i’d hoped. Whilst i’m a hell of a long way off where i want to be; It’s almost unfathomable,some might say ludacris to be any where near the level of the previously name dropped skaters. However I for one will try and remember that once upon a time,it was also unfathomable that my uncoordinated legs would be able to manage a plough.
